Replacement Patio Cushions, Made to Size

Flat, faded or mildewed cushions can be replaced to size, in outdoor fabric over quick-dry foam. Replacement cushions start at about $40 each for a simple chair cushion and rise with size, thickness and fabric. Each one is quoted from its measurements.

When cushions are the right fix

Many sling and strap chairs are designed to take a seat pad or a seat-and-back cushion, and deep seating sets depend on them entirely. Cushions wear out faster than the frame and usually faster than the slings. The common complaints:

  • Flat foam that no longer springs back.
  • Faded fabric.
  • Mildew or a musty smell after storms, which means the foam is holding water.
  • Torn ties or broken zippers.

What we make them from

  • Outdoor fabric. Sunbrella-grade outdoor fabric is the usual choice for cushions in this trade.
  • Quick-dry foam. Cushion makers recommend dry-fast foam outdoors because it resists moisture, dries quickly and helps prevent mold and mildew.
  • Ties, hinges and zippers matched to the original where possible.

Measuring

Send us the length, width and thickness of the old cushion, where the ties are, and a photo. If the cushion has a curved front or a cut-out for the arms, a paper template traced on the seat is the most reliable way to get it right.

Pair it with the frame

If the sling or straps under the cushion are also going, it makes sense to do them together; see sling replacement and vinyl strap restrapping. A refinished frame with new fabric and new cushions is as close to a new set as repair gets; the refinish or replace calculator shows what that costs against new.

How a replacement cushion is made

  1. Measure or template. We take length, width and thickness, note any curve, arm cut-out or hinge, and mark where the ties sit on the frame.
  2. Choose the foam. For outdoor seats we use quick-dry foam. Reticulated foam, the type usually sold as dry fast, has an open-cell structure that lets water flow straight through and drain out instead of soaking in.
  3. Choose the fabric. Sunbrella-grade outdoor fabric is the usual pick. We bring samples so you can see the color in your own light.
  4. Sew and fit. Ties, zipper and any welt cord are sewn in, and we fit the cushion to the chair before we call it done.

What moves the price

  • Size and shape. A rectangular seat pad is the simplest; a curved back or a cut-out costs more.
  • Thickness. More foam, more cost.
  • Fabric grade. Premium outdoor fabric runs above the standard grades.
  • Count. A set of matching cushions is cut in one run, which saves fabric.

Warranty before you replace

If your cushions are from a recent set, check the maker first. Cushion fabric warranties vary a lot: Tropitone states one year, Winston and Homecrest two years residential, and Brown Jordan five years on fabric color and strength loss. Tropitone excludes flattening and normal fading. A flat cushion on an older set is a replacement job.

What the makers build into theirs

Tropitone describes its own cushions as quick-dry polyester fill with mildew inhibitors and self-draining cores, which is the standard a replacement should meet. Brown Jordan asks owners to store cushions and textiles in a cool, dry place. We build replacements to drain the same way, so a monsoon soaking dries out instead of sitting in the foam.

Cushion questions owners ask

Should I bring cushions in for the summer? Tropitone suggests removing and storing cushions when they are not in use to extend their life. In Tucson that matters most through the summer.

Can I wash the covers in a machine? Homecrest and Brown Jordan both say no: clean them in place with mild soap and water and let them air dry standing up.

Why does my old cushion smell musty? Ordinary foam holds water after a storm and stays damp inside. Dry-fast foam lets it drain.

Do new cushions fit sling chairs? Many sling and strap chairs take a seat pad. Bring the chair or a photo and we will tell you how the ties should sit.

Care in Tucson

  • Store cushions out of the summer sun when you are not using them; sun is what fades the fabric.
  • Stand cushions on edge to dry after rain. Brown Jordan’s care guide says the same for its performance fabrics: rinse, then air dry upright.
  • Wash with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do replacement patio cushions cost?

From about $40 for a simple chair cushion in outdoor fabric, rising with size, thickness, shape and fabric grade. A seat-and-back set, a deep seating cushion or a chaise pad costs more. We quote each cushion by its measurements.

What foam should outdoor cushions use?

Quick-dry outdoor foam. Cushion makers recommend it because it resists moisture, dries quickly and helps prevent mold and mildew after a storm.

Can you copy my old cushions?

Usually, yes. Bring or send the old cushion and we measure it, including the ties or hinge, and match the shape. If the old one has shrunk or flattened we work from the frame instead.
