Chalky or faded finish on aluminum patio furniture
A finish that has gone dull and leaves white powder on your hand is chalking: the sun has broken down the resin that holds the pigment. It is cosmetic, not structural, and the permanent fix is a refinish. Powder coating typically costs $75 to $95 per chair, $100 to $125 per chaise and $170 to $190 per table in Tucson, plus stripping if the old finish has to come off.
Check this first: the wipe test
- Wipe a dark cloth across the top of an arm. White or pale residue on the cloth is chalking.
- Compare top and underside. Chalking is worst where the sun hits. If the underside of the arm is still glossy, the color can be matched well.
- Wash and wax one arm. Mild soap and water, then automotive paste wax. If it looks good for months, maintenance may be enough for now.
- Look for bubbles or lifting. If the finish is bubbling or peeling, that is a different problem; see bubbling under the paint.
What is usually wrong
| What you find | Likely cause | Fix and typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Light chalk, wax brings it back | Early UV breakdown | Wash and wax; nothing to buy yet |
| Heavy chalk, returns fast | Resin badly degraded | Powder coat, $75-$190 per piece |
| Chalky and chipped | Degraded finish, edges exposed | Strip and powder coat |
| Fading only on the sun side | UV exposure, uneven | Powder coat for an even finish |

Why it happens so much here
Chalking is UV breaking down the polymer resin in the coating so the pigment loses adhesion. Dark colors show it most, as a white haze. Powder coat chemistry matters: epoxy and hybrid powders are not outdoor durable and chalk quickly in sun, while outdoor polyester powders hold up much longer. With about 85 percent of possible sunshine, Tucson finds out quickly which kind a set was coated with.
What a refinish involves
Slings or straps, glides and caps come off. The old finish is scuffed or stripped, depending on its state, any frame repairs are made, and the frame is powder coated and baked. Then it goes back together, often with new fabric, because the fabric has to come off anyway. See powder coating and refinishing, and use the refinish or replace calculator to compare against new.
Warranty check
Tropitone, Winston and Homecrest each state five years on the finish against peeling, cracking or blistering, but normal fading and minor color variation are generally excluded. Chalking on an old set is wear, not a defect.
When to call
Call when wax no longer holds the look, or when you are doing new slings or straps anyway and want the frames done in the same trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can chalking be cleaned off?
The loose powder can be washed off and a coat of automotive wax can bring back some depth on a gloss finish; Tropitone and Brown Jordan both recommend waxing the frame. The resin underneath is still degraded, so the chalk returns. A refinish is the permanent fix.
What does a refinish cost?
Typically $75 to $95 per chair, $100 to $125 per chaise or loveseat and $170 to $190 per table for powder coat, plus stripping where needed: about $25 to $100 a chair and $135 to $300 a table.
Does chalking mean the frame is failing?
No. Chalking is the finish, not the aluminum. A chalky frame is usually structurally fine.
