Refinish or Replace? Patio Furniture Restoration Cost Calculator
A full restoration means a new powder coat and, usually, new fabric. This gives the typical range per piece, so you can put it next to the price of a new piece of the same quality. Every number comes from the pricing page.
How to read the result
A sling chair needing a full strip, a powder coat and new slings typically lands around $185 to $315. A chair with a sound but chalky finish and new straps lands around $155 to $190. Put that against what a new chair of similar weight and build costs from the maker. Winston, Tropitone and Homecrest each warrant their aluminum frames for 15 years residential, so on a sound frame of that quality you are buying back most of a frame’s life for the price of finish and fabric.
The case for replacing
- Light frames. If the set was inexpensive new, restoration can cost more than the set did.
- Steel frames rusting through. Winston, for example, states that its steel furniture is not warranted against rust.
- Several failed welds. That usually points to the design or the metal.
Before you decide
Check the finish with the wipe test on the chalky faded finish page, and look for bubbles using the bubbling under the paint page. Those two decide which finish option to pick above. More detail on the work is on powder coating and refinishing, and the blog post on restrap or replace math walks through a whole set.
What does a full restoration cost per piece?
Four questions: the piece, the state of the finish, the seat, and how many. Compare the result against what a new piece of the same quality costs.
Every line is a typical range from the pricing page. Weld repairs ($50 to $150 per repair) and any trip charge are separate lines on a real quote. Compare the total with a new piece of similar weight and quality, not with a light big-box set.
Send this estimate to the quote formAn estimate, not a quote. The firm number comes after we see the frames, in writing before any work starts.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is replacing smarter than refinishing?
When the frame is light, thin-wall aluminum that cost less new than the restoration would cost now; when it is steel and rusting through; or when several welds have failed. In those cases we will tell you so on the quote.
Why does the finish answer matter so much?
A faded but sound finish can often be scuffed and coated over. A finish that is bubbling, peeling or pitted has to be stripped to clean metal first, otherwise the corrosion under it comes straight back through the new coat.
Where do these numbers come from?
The pricing page: powder coat from a national cost guide ($75 to $95 a chair, $100 to $125 a chaise, $170 to $190 a table), stripping from the same guide and a published blasting price list, and slings and straps from published shop price lists.
